(Joyeux Anniversaire= happy birthday!)
I have officially survived my first day In France, and so far it looks like I'll make it through my 2nd day as well!
Of course things never go smoothly for me, the airlines (darn Air Canada!) lost my luggage, along with about 20 other people's, so I'm without practically anything! Yesterday Aline took me to a store that was like Khols to get another pair of pants since all I have is one pair of jeans. In January every store in France has a sale, Aline was telling me all the sales are under government regulation, so luckily the clothes were cheap!
Since all my jackets were in my luggage Aline's mother gave me a jacket to wear, it's warm and for that I am thankful, but it goes to my calf and is fur lined.. So I look like either a pimp or a Russian (maybe a Russian pimp?).. Which I can say is not a good look on me.
Aline has 3 children; the oldest is Maialen who is 5, Lubin is 3, and Ewen is almost 1.
To drink we had Cidre, which is a specially of Brittany and delicious. I'm pretty sure Cidre is just alcoholic Apple cider. And of course we finished off our meal with some coffee ~
So far the hardest thing being in France is the language barrier. Aline speaks very good English so it's easy to talk to her, but her parents and all the children speak very little English so I pretty much just laugh when everyone else laughs and smile when everyone else is smiling.
The houses, roads, shops, and even the people here are picturesque. It is a very beautiful town, and along with that there is a lot of WWII history here, I got very lucky where I ended up. As much as I would have loved to be in Paris, in light of the shootings I'm very happy to be in the countryside.
In case anyone reading this has not heard, yesterday there was a mass shooting at a newspaper in Paris because that newspaper posted a political cartoon about Islam. The newspaper had received terrorist threats about the cartoon, but Aline explained to me that French people take their democracy and freedom of expression very seriously (just like Americans) so they published the cartoon a few months ago. Guns are strictly forbidden in France (besides hunting) so shootings don't happen often here, and 4 very important journalists/cartoonists were lost yesterday so many of the French people are mourning that loss today. So thoughts and prayers for the families of those lost and all of France.
Yesterday Aline told me that in Brittany you only see the sun several times a day. I understand that because it is almost constantly drizzling rain, but it is very light and once it stops it is beautiful. (Beautiful and cold!)
Aline told me if anyone asks if I've seen the movie Taken again, just to ask them if they have seen the movie The Day After Tomorrow since it's practically the same question.
Also yesterday I explained to Aline what Tinder is while we were at Maialen's gymnastics practice, and this morning Aline told me if I see the shooters from yesterday on Tinder I should swipe left because they are not cute... And then probably call the police after.
Bonne Journée! Au revoir!
Have a great day! Goodbye!
